Thais build spirit houses in front of every new building - office buildings, shops, restaurants, apartment buildings, houses - they just about all have them. The spirit house does exactly what it says - it houses a spirit that protects the building from harm. The only thing you have to do is remember to feed it every day and leave flowers and incense as offerings.
I love the spirit houses though - they're so pretty!
